In these days of power tools and mass production one Devon business continues to pioneer traditional hand tool methods of makings things. Sallerton Wood is 10 acres of beautiful mixed deciduous woodland with a stream running through it near Launceston, close to the River Tamar on the Devon and Cornwall border. Owner Andy Moreton and his team are appearing at the festival for the first time, promoting courses aimed at people who want to have a go at green woodwork with no previous knowledge or skills required.

Andy says:“ We are proud to use traditional management methods of coppicing and it’s a place of education for people interested in learning about traditional and sustainable woodland management methods and how to use woodland timber to make craft products.

Sallerton Wood offers a range of tutor-led green woodwork courses to make products such as mallets, spatulas, shave horses, stools and chairs from green wood. All courses take place within the heart of the woodland itself in simple workshop shelters. There is a large well-equipped workshop, and a timber-framed utility shelter for cooking and tea-making. The utility shelter is equipped with a large dining table, pans, utensils, and a wood-fired clay oven and rocket stoves for use during courses.

One–day courses cover the properties of green wood, cleaving techniques and production of simple craft objects created from a greenwood log using traditional hand tools such as draw-knives and pole lathes.
Anything made during the day will be yours to take home.

Basic wild camping is offered within Sallerton Wood. Facilities provided are a site within the woodland to pitch a tent, a compost toilet, piped spring water for washing and cooking, and drinking water.
