Enter our Ready, Veggie Bake Competition!

Toby with our Chocolate Beetroot Cake and Courgette Cake

Do you cook a cracking courgette cake? Love baking with beetroot? Go potty for pumpkin pie? If you think you have what it takes to bake Britain’s Best Vegetable Cake, then the organisers of Toby’s Garden & Harvest Festival want to hear from you!

Not only is baking cakes with vegetables a novel way to get your Five-a-Day but as gardeners who grow courgettes know, it’s the perfect way to use up gluts. So much of our harvest lends itself to baking, and it’s not just courgettes – carrots, beetroot, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, parsnips and even peas can be used to make tasty cakes.

If you make a mean veggie-cake, whether it’s your own original or your favourite cook-book recipe, we’d love you to share it with us so we can pass it on to Britain’s gardeners and bakers. Whether it’s grow your own, veg box, farm shop or supermarket, let’s celebrate all our lovely British grown harvest vegetables!

Cakes will be judged in two categories – Adults and Under 12’s. Five bakers will be short-listed in each category to receive free weekend tickets and be asked to bring their cake along to the Festival at Forde Abbey, near Chard in Somerset on Saturday 16th September. The winner will receive a certificate from festival host Toby Buckland along with a prize of a Harvest Hamper and have their recipe published on Toby’s Garden & Harvest Festival website and social media.

Celebrate the harvest with us – you could win Best in Show!

HERE’S HOW TO ENTER:

Send your vegetable cake recipe along with a picture of your cake to lisa@tobygardenfest.co.uk along with a couple of lines, telling us which category you want to be judged in, where the recipe comes from and why your cake deserves to win.

The judges will short-list five recipes and if short-listed, you will be given free entry to the Festival for yourself and a friend and asked to bake your cake and bring it along on Saturday 16th September.

The short-listed cakes will be on display for the duration of the Festival and be judged on Sunday morning by Festival host Toby Buckland, BBC One Show’s garden expert Christine Walkden, Jim Buttress of BBC’s Big Allotment Challenge  and the winner of Britain’s Best Chocolate Cake, Gabrielle Jackson.

Judging will be based on taste, content, originality and presentation.

The Best in Show will be announced on Sunday afternoon and prize awarded in Forde Abbey’s Great Hall.
