This two-hour session is an ideal opportunity for beginners keen to learn pencil and watercolour work and how to paint seasonal plants from sight.

Harriet de Winton is an award-winning watercolour artist and wedding stationer based in Devon. She runs the stationery studio de Winton Paper co, painting beautiful watercolour wedding stationery for clients worldwide. She has developed her own botanical painting style which she shares through workshops and bespoke commissions.

Course duration: 2hrs

Make a hand-tied bouquet with Amelia Cooper Smith 

Learn how to make a beautiful hand-tied bouquet, get tips on growing you own cut flower patch and take your bouquet home! 

From her small-scale cut flower farm and florist in Combeinteignhead, South Devon, Amelia grows thousands of flowers, including heirloom, scented, and unusual varieties. her style is natural and abundant using her own home grown flowers. Her farm is located in an ancient apple orchard and has six polytunnels that that stretch the picking season and possibilities of what will grow.

Learn to weave a willow owl

Weave your own willow owl with artist Jo Sadler

Jo Sadler  is a Somerset Willow Artist with ten year’s experience.

She teaches willow animal sculpture all over the Southwest using willow from the Somerset Levels.  She has a large following of willow enthusiasts keen to learn more and create more using this fast growing skill.

She aims to encourage people to let themselves go and try something very creative in her classes. She teaches willow sculpture at River Cottage  at Axminster  and the Symondsbury Estate in Bridport , both Devon venues . Jo also make commissions and bespoke pieces from Werewolves to Rutting Stags. The Newt has ‘a flock of sheep’ alongside the ‘British White Cow’  and the ‘Rutting Stags’ are currently on display at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens.

She says : As a skill  it is very hands on and each piece works with you to create bespoke and personal sculptures. The Little Owl  which we will be creating at Powderham is a great sculpture-small enough for indoors and lovely hovering over a garden border or lawn”.

Design and build your own sealed miniature house plant ecosystem in a course led by Frankie from Exeter’s Hutch House Plants, covering everything from plant selection, layering and planting design – plus the care, techniques and tricks that’ll ensure your terrarium thrives.

With thousands of plants to nurture on a daily basis, the team at Hutch have experienced it all and are on a mission to share their knowledge and skills with you!

In this relaxed and informative 2-hour session, you’ll learn how to make fermented food, plus, you’ll get to sample a variety of ferments from their Advanced Food Preservation Techniques course, giving you a taste of more exciting possibilities.

About the Learn a Craft courses

What? A chance to learn a new skill with local experts and make your Festival visit truly special.

Where? All courses are in historic rooms, including the Victorian Kitchen and the old Estate Office, within the heart of Powderham Castle.

Duration: Courses 1.5-2.5 hours, depending on which you choose, and run either am or pm. Check out the details for individual courses.

Costs: Each course is per person, individually priced depending on the course, and includes material and entrance to the festival.
